The G6 Rhino, South Africa’s self-propelled 155mm howitzer, entered service in 1988 as a mobile artillery system for deep-strike operations during the Border War. Mounted on a heavily modified 6×6 mine-protected chassis with all-wheel drive and central tyre inflation, it reaches 85 km/h on roads and 35 km/h off-road, with a 700 km range. The 45-calibre gun fires HE, ERFB-BB, and VLAP rounds to 50 km (with base-bleed), carrying 45 projectiles. A crew of five operates under 20-30mm armour resisting 23mm AP frontally and mines via V-hull. Automated loading, NBC filtration, and GPS/inertial navigation enable shoot-and-scoot tactics. Deployed in Angola’s Operation Hooper, 43 units built; it remains SANDF’s long-range fire support backbone.
